Hi

Concerning CF cards the Mc218 uses (TYPE 1) and I have currently bought a 32mb HITACHI card and it works very well.

Backup: The software that follows with the MC218 have a backup utility and I have used a couple of times to restore some datafiles etc. and my experience is that it backs up everything on the disks - It copies everything in its original format to the PC harddrive - This means that you don't have to restore everything, but you can restore single files if necessary.
