Hands on with Google-Run T-Mobile G1

By James Alan Miller
September 23, 2008

Sure, the first Android phone is missing some basic features—so did the iPhone (it still does, in fact)—but it has potential, nonetheless—first in the consumer market and later, perhaps, as an enterprise phone.

Michael Gartenberg, over at one of our sister sites, the mediabistro.com blog MobileDevicesToday's, just spent a little time checking out the first gPhone, the Android-run T-Mobile G1, which was made official today at a launch event in New York City. For the most part, Gartenberg liked what he saw during his hands-on time with the highly-anticipated phone. He thinks the G1 has potential.

However, as he explains, the first iteration of an Android phone is more of a consumer phone and less for business, at least not yet.

In this post, Gartenberg details seven things he thinks are missing from the G1. These include no tethering capability and the lack of support for editing Microsoft Office files, with only a limited ability to read them.

One of the most-talked about features of the G1 is its integration with Amazon's MP3 store. While not iTunes integration, Gartenberg says the move can only benefit all parties involved.
