By James Alan Miller
Apple's released a pair of software updates for the iPhone 3G. Neither of them seem to address the ever growing complaints regarding wireless connectivity and application loading—although the latest, firmware 2.02, according to Apple's Jennifer Bowcock should improve"communication with 3G networks," it doesn’t appear to have for most people.
Nonetheless, Apple continues to work on solutions to these and other iPhone 3G problems. The strongest indication yet arrives courtesy of a short reply from Apple CEO Steve Jobs in response to an AppleInsider reader's iPhone 3G complaints.
Jobs said in his e-mail that "this is a known iPhone bug that is being fixed in the next software update in September." Although Jobs seems to be referring specifically to the issue, apparently introduced with firmware update 2.02, where users’ iPhones won't load non-default programs, it's hard to believe that the wireless connectivity problems won't be addressed in some way as well. The wireless bugs are said to be the result of the immaturity of the chipset used in the iPhone 3G. With any luck, it can be corrected through a software update and not require Apple to initiate a massive recall of the iPhone 3G. While it's good to know Apple is continuing to work on fixing the iPhone 3G, let's hope users don't have to wait too long for them to be resolved. September is still ten days away. That in itself is too long to make folks continue to wait. Let alone should the next software update appears any later - say the second, third or - I hope not - the last week of the month.
