Chances are, if your Palm PDA or smartphone isn't of the Treo or Centro persuasion, it does not support high-capacity SDHC memory cards. That means your device can't handle SD cards higher than 2GB in capacity. Pretty limited when you consider SDHC cards are available in sizes as high as 32GB.

Since Palm refuses to develop an SDHC driver for a number of its devices, a group that calls itself the PalmPowerUps has gone ahead and done so on its own. The first fruit of its labor is now available in beta. In addition to bringing SDHC to these handhelds, the driver promises to noticeably speed up access speeds of standard SD cards.

The beta supports the following devices:

  •  Palm TX
  •  LifeDrive
  •  Tungsten T5
  •  Tungsten E2
  •  Zire 72
  •  Zire 31

With the following due to be supported soon:

  •  Tungsten E
  •  Tungsten C
  •  Tapwave Zodiac
  •  Tungsten T3

This trial software is available for $35. When the final version ships, the cost will drop down to $20.

To handle expansion cards 4GB or higher, you must make sure your device supports the FAT32 file system, according PalmPowerUps. You'll have to download and install the this driver for all devices other than the Palm LifeDrive and Palm TX. It is available from Palm here.
