By James Alan Miller
There will be no more watches built with Microsoft's Smart Personal Objects Technology (SPOT) technology, according to a post by post by program director Jon Canan at SpotStop.com.
SPOT watches use tiny, low-cost, very low power, and integrated FM radio receivers to push and display up-to-date personalized and location-specific information via MSN Direct. Original channels included news, weather information, stock quotes, personal messages, and calendar appointment reminders. Later SPOT watches added sports scores, movie listings, trivia, horoscopes, and lottery results.
Here's what Canan had to say:
As of recently, the Smart Watches with MSN Direct have sold out and are no longer for sale. While we continue to move forward with MSN Direct and seeking out new opportunities for devices that would benefit from the MSN Direct service, we, along with our watch partners, do not have immediate plans to create a new version of the Smart Watch, as we are focused on other areas of our business. We will maintain support of our watch customers and continue to deliver information to the watches, but we do not plan to increase our investment in the watch business going forward. The first SPOT watches shipped way back in early 2004. Looks like whatever demand there was for the technology petered out, desptite the best effforts on the part of Microsoft and its partners.
