Here's T-Mobile's official statement regarding the matter:
Given the great anticipation and the heavy pre-sale demand for the T-Mobile G1 with Google, we nearly tripled the number of phones initially available for delivery on our Oct. 22 launch date, and have sold through them all. However, to accommodate additional T-Mobile customers who want to pre-order a device, they now have the opportunity to place a pre-order through Oct. 21, for delivery at a later date. T-Mobile expects to sell half a million G1s during its first quarter of release, with the number growing to an even more impressive 2 million over the ensuing months. The smartphone will go for $179 with a two-year contract. Data plans range from $25 (unlimited data with 400 text messages) to $35 per month (no cap on the text messaging).
