By
Skyhook Wireless, provider of the Wi-Fi Positioning System (WPS) and the XPS Hybrid Location System, and Symbian Limited, the market leader in open operating systems for mobile phones, announced today that they are demonstrating Wi-Fi positioning on the latest version of Symbian OSTM, v9.5.
While existing mobile location technology such as A-GPS and cellular triangulation are an important part of the solution, according to Skyhook, these technologies have accuracy and availability issues indoors and in urban environments. Therefore the company's Wi-Fi Positioning System can be integrated with Symbian’s Location Based Services (LBS) architecture to address these issues and to optimise location accuracy, coverage, and time to fix across all environments. “Skyhook’s Wi-Fi Positioning System is a good illustration of the diverse location acquisition support of our LBS architecture,” said Symbian VP of Ecosystem Development Mike Whittingham in a statement.“It’s an innovative solution that will enable the future revenue opportunities of location-based services.” A demonstration of the technology is being showcased on the Symbian stand at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London today and tomorrow.
