Windows Mobile 6 Upgrade Finally Available for Samsung BlackJack

AT&T and Samsung have released an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 for their popular BlackJack, also known as the SGH-i607, smartphone. This platform update was promised ages ago. With the release of the BlackJack II not too long ago—itself already running on Microsoft latest mobile platform—it seemed like Windows Mobile 6 would never arrive for the original BlackJack model.

With this upgrade installed, the BlackJack will become a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device like the BlackJack II. Of course, it won't give the former the greater amount of storage, higher-quality camera (up to 2 megapixels from 1.3 megapixels), integrated GPS, and support for 3G cellular-wireless data networking outside the U.S. that the latter brings to the table.

In addition to a sleeker user interface and smoother running mobile platform, Windows Mobile 6 will update Microsoft’s Office Mobile application to allow BlackJack users to not only view, as they already could, but edit Word and Excel documents for the first time. You can still only view PowerPoint presentations.

The upgrade allows the BlackJack to support HTML-formatted e-mail as well. That means folks can view and compose e-mail messages in their original HTML format with live links to Web sites, support for images, tables and bullets.

You can download the BlackJack's Windows Mobile 6 upgrade here, directly from the Samsung Web site, where you'll also find detailed instructions to walk you through the installation process.

In addition to Windows Mobile 6, Samsung says the update includes numerous enhancements/corrections for the BlackJack. It should take about 10 minutes to complete the installation process, which Samsung walks you though with detailed instructions.
