T-Mobile Germany to Deliver iPhone on November 9th

As expected, Apple has chosen T-Mobile to be the exclusive provider of the iPhone in Germany, it was announced today. Yesterday, we learned that O2 won the very same privlage for the UK.

The iPhone will become available from T-Mobile on November 9th, the same day it ships in Britian. T-Mobile plans to sell the iPhone for 399 euros (about $554) with a two-year tariff and including V.A.T. No word yet regarding monthly service plans.

Like the folks in Britan the people of Germany will essentially get the same 8GB and EDGE-enabled (no 3G) iPhone AT&T has been offering in the U.S. for about two and half months now, but with firmware update 1.1.1 (not yet available in the U.S.), which adds the Wi-Fi iTunes Store and some additional features, already installed.

By the close of this year, T-Mobile promises to become the only German GSM mobile operator to provide EDGE service throughout its network, far better than the 30 percent coverage O2 customers will get. Nonetheless, with 220 Kbps download speeds, EDGE service is still far slower than several Mbps 3G or Wi-Fi. Just ask AT&T customers.

This fact makes O2's promise of free Wi-Fi service at its 7,500 of hotspots, with speeds as fast as 11Mbps, essential to the iPhone's success in that country. T-Mobile, which supports more hotspots worldwide, over 20,000, than any other company, offers almost have of them, 8,600, in Germany. A factor that could lead the carrier to provide free Wi-Fi service to its iPhone customers as well. We'll keep you posted.

As with O2, T-Mobile's iPhone will support Visual Voicemail, first introduced back in June by AT&T and Apple. Visual Voicemail lets users look at a listing of their voicemails, decide which messages to listen to, and then go directly to those messages without listening to prior messages.

Next up: We should hear what operator will deliver the iPhone in France. It is expected that Orange will win Apple's bidding war for the iPhone in that country.

Pocket-lint reports that Apple CEO Steve Jobs said yesterday, during the O2 event, the next version of the iPhone, with 3G, is already in the works. He said, "We are working on the next iPhone already, the one after that and the one after that... You can expect a 3G iPhone later next year."
