Of the several new Palm smartphones that are supposed to be in the works, none has captured people's attention quite like the model code-named Gandolf. Some new pictures of this smartphone recently surfaced.

This upcoming Treo model, which may end up going being called the Treo 800, is supposed to feature the greatest deviation in design of any Treo since the advent of the Treo 600, and could be Palm's smallest and thinnest smartphone yet.

It is said Gandolf will come in Windows Mobile and Palm OS editions for both CDMA and GSM networks.

The pictures in this article (and more), leaked to Palm Infocenter, are supposed to show the GSM version of Gandolf running on Palm OS Garnet.

Not much else is known about the Palm OS version of this smartphone, other than it'll include a microSD slot (located on the right side), infrared port, a smaller-than-usual touch screen, Bluetooth and a camera.

Previously, a picture of what is reported to be a Windows Mobile editon of Gandolf (the Treo 800w?) with a Vodafone logo, meaning it would be a GSM device, leaked. According to reports, a CDMA version will land at Sprint with support for the carrier's EV-DO Rev.A data netork.

The Sprint version is supposed to ship during the fourth quarter for $200.

    Nice, but?
Nice, but they dragged around so long getting to this point that I gave up and bought a Blackberry 8800.I DO miss having infrared, though. Is this just a legacy thing or do a lot more people still use it than I thought?...more
