By James Alan Miller
As with the first version, Mail for Exchange 2.0 leverages Microsoft ActiveSync technology (available in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and later) to enable synchronization of your Microsoft Inbox mail folder, calendar and contacts between Microsoft Exchange servers and mobile devices. It delivers a number of performance improvements and new features, however: such as better connectivity, Task synchronization and longer battery life.
Version 2.0 also adds support for Global Address List (GAL) lookup, the ability to accept and decline meeting requests, on-device search of synchronized e-mails, and better integration with the next version of the popular Microsoft Office compatible Quickoffice application, which is due to ship in September.
For more information, see Nokia's release notes for Mail for Exchange 2.0. To find out if your Nokia smartphone model is compatible with the software, click here. See here for a full overview of Mail for Exchange. Upgrading from any previous version to Mail for Exchange 2.0 requires that you perform a Full Resync. This is required to utilize the new Task synchronization feature. To do this, start with the Mail for Exchange application and select Options > Full resync on your smartphone. In related news, Nokia has just added new device management features to its Intellisync Mobile Suite. These enhancements include wider device support, tighter integration to enhance the user experience, remote control, and improved theft-loss protection and hardware control (the ability to disable a smartphone's camera or Wi-Fi capabilities for example) to allow IT managers to enhance and scale customer support while reducing support costs, according to the company.
