Mark/Space has just updated The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile to version 4. Over the years, The Missing Sync has served as the missing link between Apple desktops and laptops and PDAs and smartphones. It often delivers a level of compatibility between handheld and Mac not offered by platform (Palm OS, RIM BlackBerry, Windows Mobile) or device vendors themselves.

What's most important about this release is the added support for the latest edition of Windows Mobile, version 6. That's good news for the growing number owners of Windows Mobile 6-run smartphones who would like to synchronize contacts, calendars, tasks, notes, Office documents, iTunes playlists, and more between their new or upgraded devices and Mac OS X.

You've already got the T-Mobile Wing and an update to the platform from Windows Mobile 5 available for the Dash, not to mention the HTC Mogul from Sprint, for example. And, rumor has it, upgrades to Windows Mobile 6 for AT&T's three major Microsoft-based smartphones - the 8525, Samsung BlackJack and Treo 750 - may be just around the corner as well.

The new edition of The Missing Sync also adds support for video encoding for mobile playback through a new Video plug-in. With the plug-in, you can import videos taken with the built-in camera present on many Windows Mobile devices. These videos can be imported directly into an iPhoto album or into a folder of the user's choosing on a Mac.

The Video plug-in also provides encoding and mobile playback capabilities, which give users the option to encode DRM-free QuickTime video from the Mac and download it to their Windows Mobile device. A player with support for MP4 video, such as Windows Media Player Mobile 10, is required for mobile video playback, however.

The Missing Sync also adds a Call Log plug-in and matching Call Log application for Mac OS X to provide access to the log of phone calls made and received with a Windows Mobile smartphone. During each sync, the Call Log plug-in reads the call log stored on the device and copies its data to the Mac.

There's also a new SMS Log plug-in and, like with the Call Log plug-in, a matching SMS Log application for Mac OS X. Working in combination, these components provide access to the device's log of sent and received SMS text messages.

The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile version 4 sells for $39.95. It is a free upgrade for version 3 users and $24.95 for those with earlier editions.
