Palm has posted and an update that upgrades two of its smartphones, the Treo 700w and Treo 700wx, to the latest edition of the company's Pocket PC Phone software: version 1.22. Released in January 2005, the Treo 700w was Palm's first Windows Mobile-run product.

Nope. It doesn't include an upgrade to the Windows Mobile 6 for these version 5 smartphones. Nonetheless, it does bring some new capabilities to the Treo 700w and bug fixes to the Treo 700wx, which is an upgrade to the former Treo in the first place.

To find out if your Treo requires this update, on your device Press Start --> Select Settings --> Select the System tab --> Open About --> Go to the Phone tab. If you see TREO700W-1.02-VZW, TREO700W-1.10-VZW, or TREO700WX-1.20-VZW then Palm it is a go.

Treo 700w/wx Updater 1.22 delivers the following:

Treo 700w:

  •  High-speed dial up networking (DUN) – use your Treo smartphone as a wireless modem for fast web access virtually anywhere1. Supports USB and Bluetooth connections.
  •  Advanced audio support (A2DP) – listen to the clear sounds of high-definition audio with new support for Bluetooth stereo headsets.
  •  Today Screen enhancements – one-touch access to the Speakerphone and Mute control buttons gives you more freedom than ever.
  •  Hands-free enhancements – Drive safely and work more efficiently. Get support for even more Bluetooth carkits and the Palm wired carkit.
  •  Abbreviated dialing preferences – save time with the international dialing prefix and abbreviated dialing for campus environments.

    Treo 700wx:

  •  Updates Registry settings for Bluetooth stereo headsets (A2DP) and Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking (DUN) support.
  •  DUN performance improvements.
  •  Additional Daylight Savings Time features.

In addition to a Treo 700w or Treo 700wx (obviously), system requirements for the update include Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2, or Windows Vista; IE 6 or higher on the desktop PC; ActiveSync 4.2 or later installed for Windows 2000 or XP (Windows Mobile Device Center installed for Vista); and 4MB of Program Memory & 4MB of Storage Memory available on the Treo itself, which needs to be connected to its AC power adapter and sync cable throughout the procedure.

Although Palm designed Treo 700w/wx Updater 1.22 to preserve data on your smartphone during installation, we highly recommend you back it all up before hand.
