By James Alan Miller
DataViz has updated Documents To Go Premium Edition for Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone and Windows Mobile 6 Standard devices to version 3. As with previous versions of the application, users may view, edit and sync most Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) documents on their smartphones.
With this new edition, however, the viewing capability has been extended to Microsoft Office Word and Excel 2007 files in their native .docx and .xlsx format for the first time. DataViz plans to add the ability to edit and create Word, Excel and PowerPoint Office 2007 files to Documents To Go later this year. Office 2007, released early this year, is a major overhaul to Microsoft's signature desktop suite. Changes include the addition of a new Extensible Markup Language (XML) file format, called Open XML, to assist with the exchange of information between disparate data systems. DataViz first introduced he ability to view (but not edit) documents in these new file formats in the Palm OS edition of Documents To Go. Those who buy Documents To Go Premium Edition 3 will receive the upgrade that includes Office 2007 editing capabilities for free. The application goes for $29.99. Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone and 6.0 Standard devices include devices like the Motorola Q, Orange SPV E650, HTC S710 (HTC Vox), Samsung BlackJack, T-Mobile Dash, T-Mobile SDA, Cingular 3125, and Cingular As with previous editions of Documents To Go, the new version sports DataViz's InTact technology (compatible with earlier versions of Microsoft Office, of course), which makes sure the formatting and layout of documents are maintained when edited on a smartphone. This means, for example, all file formatting - even the complex (like headers and footers, macros and animations) - is reflected when a desktop file is opened on a smartphone after being received from a desktop or e-mailed as an attachment directly from a mobile device to a desktop. In addition to Microsoft Office files, users can view Adobe PDF files and decompress zipped attachments. It also supports charting and password protected Excel and Word files. Related Links:
