RIM Sued Over Rolling Stones BlackBerry

By Melissa Oxendale

U2 has its own iPod. So it shouldn't come as surprise that the Research In Motion (RIM) inked a deal back in 2005 to develop a limited edition Rolling Stones BlackBerry.

One problem: RIM never developed the handheld..

Sure, we know, RIM's devices first made their mark on Wall Street and with lawyers - not very rock n' roll. But hey, it's been decades since the Stones represented anything other than the status quo. Nonetheless, while I personally wouldn't be interested in such a BlackBerry, I'm sure there are some Rolling Stones fans out there who would love one.

Anyway, because the Stones-branded BlackBerry never appeared, the Rolling Stones are suing RIM for unspecified damages due to breach of contract, according to some recent reports. For its part, RIM says it told the Stones in 2006 they were terminating the contract based on a breach on the part of the band.

Apparently RIM has tried settling the issue outside of a courtroom, but the band won't budge. RIM is planning to counter sue for the return of the payment made at the start of the deal.

I wonder if the band thinks they can get more out of RIM by going to court like NTP with its $612.5 million patent-infringement-settlement windfall, although it is a completely different matter. Whatever the reason, I'm not going to worry much about this lawsuit stopping my BlackBerry service.
