Mark/Space Updates Windows Mobile-to-Mac Synchronization Software

By James Alan Miller
April 12, 2007

Mark/Space has just released the second maintenance update, 3.02, for The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile since the launch of version 3.0 of the application last fall. With the software, users of Windows Mobile Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phones and Smartphones can synchronize contacts, calendars, tasks, notes and more between their devices and Mac OS X.

There are many fixes and enhancements in this update, including the losing of the requirement one's device be in flight-mode (wireless connectivity disabled) when syncing with a Mac desktop. For the full list of improvements, see here. To view a comprehensive list of supported devices, go here

Over the years, The Missing Sync has served as the missing link between Apple desktops and laptops and Palm OS PDAs and smartphones, before the more recent addition of support for Windows Mobile and, most recently, BlackBerry devices. It often delivers a level of compatibility between handheld and Mac not delivered by the platform or device vendors themselves.

Here are some features of the latest version for Windows Mobile:

In addition to synchronizing personal information with a Mac, The Missing Sync allows users to synchronize voice memos, Word and Excel documents, Safari bookmarks, iPhoto albums and iTunes playlists. User can sync with Bare Bones Software's Yojimbo personal information organizer as well.

They can also setup folders and files to keep in sync between a Mac and mobile device. So, for example, you can edit Word and Excel files on either a Mac or Pocket PC and have them automatically synchronized.

Plugins allow you to select iPhoto albums on a Mac and have them resized for optimal viewing on your handheld, according to Mark/Space. Also, user can import photos taken with a camera-enabled Windows Mobile device directly into an iPhoto album or a folder on a Mac.

While you can sync iTunes playlists to your Windows Mobile handheld, these devices can't play protected AAC audio files, such as those purchased from the iTunes Music Store. They'll play synced podcasts and unprotected music, however.

The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 3.02 sells for $39.95, but it is a free update for registered users.
