By James Alan Miller
A few days ago a post on SprintUsers.com indicated America’s third largest operator and second biggest to use CDMA/EV-DO cellular-wireless technology would soon start carrying a new smartphone from Palm called the Treo 755p. The tipster said the target release date is May 14.
The 'p' designates this device as Palm OS Treo, just as with the Treo it is likely to replace, the Treo 700p. And the 750 would seem to suggest the smartphone nixes an external antenna for an internal type, just like Palm did with its first Windows Mobile model (the 750) and most recent Palm OS Treo model (the 680) for GSM/UTMS carriers - both available from Cingular Wireless in the U.S. As with the 700p the 750p would run on a modified version of ACCESS's Garnet OS (recently changed from Palm OS Garnet) - there's no newer Palm platform to choose from, right - and be 3G-enabled through support for Sprint's EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized network) cellular network. This high-speed technology carries content - video, e-mail, pictures, etc. - at average rates of 400 to 700 kilobits per second. More evidence of the 755p's existence appeared today through Good Technology's release notes for the most recent edition of its Intranet Client and Server. Brighthand links to these notes, which indeed mention this smartphone. However, instead of listing it under supported Palm OS devices Good lists the 755p with Windows Mobile handhelds. Puzzling, yes - but likely a mistake on the part of whoever wrote up the notes. Why would it have the 'p' if it weren't a Palm OS Treo? Either way, we expect to hear a lot more about the Treo 755p over the next couple of months. Related Links:
