Palm Desktop Supports Vista ... Sort of

Back in December, Palm, Inc. spokesman Jimmy Johnson explained to PDAStreet, "We do plan to support Vista and are testing now for compatibility. Once we have done all our testing, we’ll provide detailed product information and instructions for users on compatibility requirements."

The company has now posted information on it Web site regarding how well the Palm Desktop works with Microsoft's new Windows Vista platform, which was made generally available earlier this week. While the Palm Desktop installs on a Vista PC and synchronizes PIM (Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Memos) data just fine, other aspects of the synchronization software don't peform as well.

Here's where Palm says users of its Palm OS devices may run into trouble:

  •  Third-party desktop applications, including those found on your Palm Software Installation CD (such as carrier-branded Dial-up Networking (DUN) desktop software and other applications), may not be compatible with Windows Vista. Please check back for updates from Palm and/or visit the third-party application website for updates.

  •  Palm Quick Install (the desktop application that allows you to move files like .prc and .pdb to your Palm device) and Palm LifeDrive™ mobile manager software are not currently Vista compatible. Please check back for updates.

  •  Help files (.hlp files) found in some versions of Palm Desktop software may not be supported in Windows Vista.

Palm suggests people check back here reguarly for updates on Vista support.

As for Palm's Windows Mobile devices - the Treo 700w, Treo 700wx and Treo 750 - they're already fully compatible with Vista through Microsoft's ActiveSync replacement Windows Mobile Device Center. ActiveSync does not support Vista at all.

Windows Mobile Device Center, which is now out of beta, manages Pocket PCs and smartphones with a new look and what Microsoft touts as a simplified and improved user interface. Vista automatically downloads the software when you initially connect a Windows Mobile device, or you can download and install the software directly from Microsoft here. Future versions will become available as a Windows Update.

According to Microsoft, specific features of Windows Mobile Device Center include:

  •  Streamlined setup through a simplified new partnership wizard and improved partnership management.
  •  Synchronization of data such as e-mail, calendars, contacts, tasks, favorites, and files.
  •  A new user interface helps you to mroe quickly access critical tasks and configure your device.
  •  Browse files and folders and open documents on your device directly from your PC.
  •  Picture management helps you detect new photos on your Windows Mobile powered device, tag and import them to the Windows Vista Photo Gallery.
  •  Use Microsoft Windows Media Player to synchronize and shuffle music files on your device.
