Microsoft Updates ActiveSync

Microsoft replaced its long-time synchronization software ActiveSync with the snazzier and, supposedly, easier-to-use Windows Mobile Device Center in Windows Vista. But what's a Pocket PC or Smartphone user to do until he upgrades his desktop system? Why download and install the just finalized ActiveSync 4.5.

That's right; Microsoft is smartly continuing to update ActiveSync, not abandoning the millions of people who will rely on the software to synchronize data between their mobile device and non-Windows Vista PC for the foreseeable future.

The new version of ActiveSync is also the only edition compatible with Windows Mobile 6. So it will be essential to those who obtain a smartphone or handheld built on the new platform—when they become available sometime in the April to June timeframe#151;but do not use a Windows Vista computer yet either.

Here are some new features ActiveSync 4.5 delivers:

  •  A faster connection between handheld and PC
  •  Stay connected to a wireless network (Wi-Fi or cellular) while connected, so you can receive VoIP calls as well as SMS or MMS messages.
  •  An improved more modern looking user interface and partnership Wizard makes it easier to locate key features, access configuration settings, and improve a users's first device configuration upon syncronization.
  •  Troubleshooter utility scans PC to identify potential problems.
  •  Better stability.
