Palm is prepping a version of its new entry-level smartphone, the $99.99 Centro, due to be released by Sprint on October 14th, for AT&T. Since Sprint has exclusive rights to this device for 90 days, don't expect to see AT&T's before the end of the year.

The apparent Proof of the AT&T edition of Centro comes in the form of a picture posted at Gear Diary. The image shows the name of the Palm OS smartphone to be the Treo 500p and not Centro, however.

While this name dovtails nicely with the new European-only Treo 500v from Vodafone, a Windows Mobile handset, there's a good chance Palm will change it to the Centro moniker by the time AT&T releases it.

The picture of the Treo 500p (Centro) shows some AT&T icons on the device's home screen, including ones for the carrier's Push-To-Talk service, AT&T Music, Xpress Mail, and AT&T Mail.

Whereas Sprint's cellular network is based on CDMA technology, AT&T's runs on competitor GSM technology. So in addition to showing that AT&T will carry this smartphone, it proves that Palm has created a version of Centro for GSM operators in general. That's a good thing, as the vast majority of mobile networks in the world are based on GSM not CDMA.

While Sprint's Centro supports that carrier's high-speed cellular-broadband EV-DO data network, it is hard to tell whether it'll support AT&T's UTMS/HSPDA 3G network.

If the AT&T version of Centro, the Treo 500p, is anything like Sprint's, then, in addition to the similarities mentioned already, it'll measure about 4.2 x 2.1 x 0.7 inches and 4.2 ounces. This makes Centro Palm's smallest and lightest smartphone ever.

With Centro, Palm has said it is targeting the 95 percent of the market who otherwise wouldn't buy a smartphone.

The smartphone also supports dial-up-networking via Bluetooth to allow you to use Centro as a modem to access the Web or corporate network. You can use Bluetooth to connect to various peripherals, including hands-free kits, wireless headsets, and GPS devices as well.

Its 2.2-inch touch screen supports a 320 x 320 pixel resolution and 65,000 colors. That screen is powered by a 1150mAh removable battery Palm promises will supply up to 3.5 hours talk and 3 days standby time.

Centro’s got 64M of internal storage and a microSD slot for up to 4GB additional memory in a single expansion card.
