An upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 for the Samsung BlackJack, also called the i607, has been in the offing for some time now. When it will actually arrive, remains a mystery, however.

That's why its a good sign that an official upgrade to Microsoft's latest mobile-device platform is now available for the BlackJack's European cousin, the i600. Perhaps this is an indication that AT&T will soon release its long-awaited Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for the BlackJack?

Users of i600 in 18 countries can download the platform upgrade here.

Yes, AT&T just introduced the BlackJack II at the CTIA Wireless show earlier this week, which will ship with Windows Mobile 6 already installed and include a number of additional improvements over its predecessor. However, that smartphone, which will go for a reasonable $150 with a 2-year contract, won't be available until some unspecified later date.

Not every BlackJack owner will want to move up to the BlackJack II, however, let alone if all they are interested in is a OS upgrade. So, how about it AT&T, let's get that promised Windows Mobile 6 update out there already.

When AT&T finally releases its update for the BlackJack, you may see some of the same improvements as in T-Mobile customers did for the similar Dash. These include more reliable e-mail delivery; support for HTML formatted messages, a better browsing, and easier device management.

It also allows Windows Smartphones, like the Dash and BlackJack, to not just view but edit Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) documents for the first time.
