After upgrading to firmware 1.1.1 last week, many users' iPhones became iBricks, particularly those of the unlocked persuasion, and what Apple considers unofficial third-party applications stopped working. Even worse, there didn't appear to be any way to downgrade these iPhones to firmware 1.0.2. to make them full functional once again.

Today, with the posting of downgrade instructions, there’s now some hope. Although the directions won't unlock your iPhone again, they will allow unofficial third-party software to run.

So for those who unlocked their iPhone to work with T-Mobile, for instance, everything will return to the way it was before if they follow the directions. That is everything but cellular voice and data service.

The iPhone Dev Team is working on a downgrade method that will also re-unlock the iPhone. Meanwhile, you'll be able to use your iPhone over Wi-Fi.

AT&T subscribers, those who didn't unlock the iPhone, who can do without the new iTunes Wi-Fi Store and all the other bug fixes and new features in firmware 1.1.1, can use the downgrade to get their iPhone functioning exactly as did before. That means third-party applications will run successfully once again.
