Crossbow on Tap for Samsung i760

Samsung demoed a new Windows Mobile smartphone dubbed the i760 not too long ago. It didn't reveal many details about the ultra-thin device with a sliding QWERTY thumb-keyboard and keyapd, however. Now, thanks to some leaked image to the blog engadget, we know a lot more.

Here’s what we’ve got:

A logo on the front of the i760 reveals Verizon Wireless will be the carrier to deliver the smartphone. Not only that, thanks to integrated EV-DO, it is compatible with the operator's high-speed data network.

The i760 will also include the Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) wireless technologies; the latter moves data at 3x the rate of standard Bluetooth.

One of the more exciting discoveries is that the i760 appears to run not just Windows Mobile, but the Pocket PC Phone Edition of Microsoft's next-generation operating system, code-named Crossbow. Unfortunately, this may put off when the i760 ships, as Microsoft has indicated handhelds and smartphones running Crossbow won't be available until the second half of 2007.

Additional known features of the i760 include a microSD slot, 128 MB of ROM, and 64 MB of RAM.

More on Crossbow
The platform upgrade is supposed to have a sleeker and glossier look than Microsoft's current mobile platform. This includes a pair of Calendar and Contacts softkeys plus Vista-like icons and folders.

In the past, a Microsoft representative indicated added features in Crossbow also include more robust ties to the Office 2007 suite (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation) and a mobile edition of Office Communicator - with instant messaging and other communications applications.

Sometime in 2008, it is rumored Microsoft will release a full-blown redesign of the Windows Mobile platform, code-named Photon. With Photon Redmond is supposed to finally unify the Smartphone and Pocket PC platforms of Windows Mobile under a single umbrella.

Its interface may be customizable as well. Those who've gotten an early preview of Photon say it allows you to control every aspect of your smartphone from a single screen with one hand.
