Dell's future handheld plans remain sketchy: The company hasn't released a new model in about two years. Will it or won’t it release anymore Pocket PCs? What about a smartphone?

The computer giant continues to support its most recent Pocket PCs - the Axim X50 series - however. The X51/X51v models are simply variations on the earlier models, basically simply adding a platform upgrade.

When Dell first introduced the X50 series, it built the Pocket PCs on Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Since that time - in 2005 - the company released an upgrade to enable users to leverage the newer Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system.

Now Dell is offering an update for those who've already upgraded their Axim's to Microsoft's most recent mobile platform. Called A02 ROM, the patch is available separately for the three Axim X50 series models - one running at 416 MHz with a QVGA display, the next 520 MHz with same type of screen, and the last 624 MHz with a VGA display.

The patch delivers the following fixes and enhancements:

  •  Adds wireless roaming function
  •  Fixes CF memory card intermittent disappear problem
  •  CF interface driver improvement for memory and modem cards
  •  Microphone recording enhancements
  •  ActiveSync connection improvements

Keep in mind that those who haven't upgraded their Axim X50 or X50v devices to Windows Mobile 5.0, must do so first before installing Dell’s latest patch, and you can't use the ROM update on the X51 and X51v Axim models.

    More on X50 Series
All Axim X50 Pocket PCs integrate Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless networking, as well as Secure Digital (SD) and CompactFlash Type II expansion slots. They measure the same 4.65 x 2.85 x .65 inches with similar basic form factors.

The Pocket PCs' regular battery is a 1100 mAH type, but there is an additional, more powerful, 2200 mAH battery available as an option.

The VGA Axim X50v's screen measures a largish 3.7 inches. A 624 MHz Intel PXA270 XScale processor powers the handheld, while an Intel 2700G multimedia accelerator delivers DVD quality video playback. There is 62 MB of RAM available to the users with 91 MB of ROM you can use like an SD memory card.

Dell's two other models in the X50 series QVGA screen measure 3.5 inches. One of these Pocket PCs has a 520 MHz XScale processor with 63MB of RAM and 94MB of ROM storage available to the user. The other has a 416 MHz XScale processor, 63MB of RAM available to the user, and 30MB of ROM storage.
