By James Alan Miller
The unlocked version of the pricy, $700, N93 is for sale from Nokia's American Web site, and not just at the company's two flagship stores in New York City and Chicago, which severely limited access for most folks; such as the majority of people unwilling to fork over the cash to fly to those two major metropolitan areas for a device that could cost as much or more than a round trip ticket. Heck, you can now order the N93 without having to go through airport security. When the N93 arrives in the post, simply pop in your GSM carrier's SIM card and your ready to say Action! and start recording. But keep in mind that the N93 still doesn't make any concessions to broader U.S. coverage than before, sticking only to the 1900 GSM band palatable over here. The 850 MHz band is missing, so service could be spotting in some areas. The version of the E70 released here added this band for full U.S. coverage. And then there's the two new smartphones Nokia introduced earlier this week, the N95 and N75, that could affect interest in the N93. Although the N95 doesn't appear to be headed anywhere until next year - and even then not to the U.S. at least for some time after that - its specifications are even more impressive than the N93's, making it Nokia's most full-featured smartphone yet. For example, the N95 has a 5 megapixel camera for picture and video to the N93's 3.2 megapixel type. The second model is the N75, which isn't in the N93's league in terms of video (only 15 frames per second to 30 for the N93), but it does offer full support for American cellular networks, including UTMS 3G. This smartphone is definitely headed to the U.S. by the end of the year.
Otherwise, specifications for the N93 remain the same as they’ve always been, since Nokia introduced it as the follow up to an earlier camcorder smartphone, the 2 megapixel N90, at an event in Germany last spring. Speaking of the N90, a couple of Italian directors used it to create a
full length documentary film called " Nuovi Comizi D'Amore" last year.
Nokia's N93 runs on the latest Symbian 9.1 and S60 3rd edition platforms, and it has the same twist and shoot form factor as the N90. The large, 6.35 ounce and 4.65 x 2.19 x 1.11 inch, tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (900/1800/1900 MHz) smartphone's 3.2 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens enables it to take video with 3x zoom at the aforementioned 30 frames per second with stereo audio recording and digital stabilization.
It also has flash and an active camera toolbar to display all available capture features, from exposure value to color tones and white balance. There are dedicated keys for shutter, zoom and flash and also a camera mode key that enables you to switch quickly between image and video capture as well.
While the N93 integrates 50 MB of memory, its miniSD card slot enables users to add up to 2 GB more storage for up to - Nokia asserts - 90 minutes of DVD-quality video or close to 2500 high-quality photos. Additional specifications include a 2.4-inch QVGA display that supports up to 262,144 colors and a wide 160 degree viewing angle. There's also 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, a digital music player, FM radio with visual radio, Universal Plug and Play, and TV-out. The 1100 mAh lithium ion i-Ion battery is supposed to get 5.1 hours talk and 10 days standby time on a single charge. Related Links:
