By James Alan Miller
Tomorrow is expected to be Treo 700wx day for Sprint. It is when business customers of the operator may finally get their hands on what Verizon subscribers have had an exclusive on for three quarters of a year: Palm's first Windows Mobile smartphone. Consumers must wait until September 3rd.
Ahead of launch, the blog gadgetsonthego.net seems to have obtained the marketing materials that'll come with that new Treo. The documents do not fill many holes left by the Internet rumor mill, but it does nix one recent hope, that the device will integrate a GPS chip.
Otherwise, as anticipated, the Treo 700wx appears to be nearly identical to its Treo 700w predecessor, other than the posssibility of more than doubling the amount of useable memory from about 25 MB in Verizon's model to more than 60 MB (128 MB in all) in Sprint's. The extra 'x' in the name would stand for extra memory in that case.
Like the Treo 700w, the Treo 700wx is a Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC that runs on a 312 MHz processor. It has an SDIO-enabled Secure Digital slot for memory and peripheral expansion, square 240 x 240 pixel resolution touch-screen, Bluetooth and a 1.3 megapixel camera. The smartphone's lithium-ion battery specs out to 5 hours talk and 300 hours standby. It'll exchange data at rates between 300 to 500 kbps on Sprint's high-speed EV-DO network. The carrier may start selling the Treo 700wx for $650 a la carte and $500 with a 2-year service contract. After the Sprint picks up the Treo 700wx, the two leading CDMA/EV-DO carriers in this country will be offering Palm's newest Treos. Both Verizon and Sprint started shipping the Palm platform Treo 700p almost simultaneously this past May. Related Links:
