By James Alan Miller
Today pictures arrived that appear to confirm this connection. The blurry images - as is often the case with leaks - sent to Engadget show a Cingular-branded Treo without an antenna like Vodafone's upcoming Palm smartphone. The clincher is a shot that somewhat clearly reads Treo 750 on the display. Like Vodafone, Cingular is a GSM carrier that offers high speed data networking. In addition to UTMS technology, which the European version will deliver, it looks like the American edition of the Treo 750 is also HSDPA enabled. HSDPA is the next step up in 3G broadband from UTMS for GSM operators. It promises to ramp up to even faster performance, but is backwards compatible to the earlier standard. It is still not known if the 750 version of the Treo will be the first to integrate Wi-Fi, as previously rumored but not indicated in Palm and Vodafone’s introduction. Last month Palm finally committed to putting the popular wireless technology into its smartphones, something most of its competitors do already. Whenever Cingular deliver the Treo 750, it most certainly will follow Vodafone's initial launch. During their join announcement for the still officially unnamed Treo, Palm and Vodafone all but screamed Europe first for the new smartphone. Initial launch countries include the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy and Netherlands before the end of the year, after which Vodafone will expand deployment to other regions. Vodafone has already posted a Web page devoted to the upcoming smartphone. The site doesn't reveal much about the new Treo that isn't known already - which isn't much - but it does say the device is coming soon and allows interested parties to register to be notified when the Treo becomes available. Rumors say a Vodafone release of the Treo 750 could take place as early as September, however, which puts the possibility of a Cingular launch of the new Treo on tap for as soon as the next month. Cingular subscribers will be ready. It has been over a year and half since the America's largest operator started offering the still popular but aging Treo 650. Number two Verizon Wireless, by contrast, has been shipping the Windows Mobile-run Treo 700w since January and the Palm-based Treo 700p since late May. Related Links:
