Create, Edit Office Docs on Latest Sony Ericsson Smartphones

July 26, 2006

Two years ago DataViz released a version of its Documents To Go mobile Office suite for Symbian operating system (OS) phones running the UIQ 2 interface. Today, the company unveiled an edition for UIQ 3.0-based smartphones like the new Sony Ericsson M600 and P990 as well as the upcoming W950 Walkman phone.

With Documents To Go—well known in the Palm world, but also available for Series 80-based Symbian devices like Nokia's 9300 and 9500 Communicators—users can use, edit and create native Microsoft Word and Excel files as well as view PowerPoint files.

The new version, as with the previous, also incorporates DataViz's InTact Technology, which aims to ensure document integrity when Microsoft Office files are opened and edited by users on mobile platforms, eliminating the need for conversion or desktop computer synchronization. The company asserts edits are intelligently merged with a file's existing formatting to create an updated document that can be e-mailed or exchanged with others directly from the smartphone.

DataViz product manager Danny Tu said the new version "takes advantage of usability improvements and features included with the newest generation of UIQ 3.0-based smartphones," including the aforementioned M600 with its dual-function keyboard for text and number input, P990 with its QWERTY thumb-keyboard and multimedia-orientated W950. For example, Documents To Go for UIQ 3.0 supports the landscape view featured on all these smartphones. Features including word count for word processing files and the ability to view spreadsheet comments have also been added.

The company also recently introduced a version of its Exchange ActiveSync client, called RoadSync for other OSs but not here, for the latest UIQ platform. DataViz first licensed the Exchange ActiveSync technology from Microsoft to integrate into its RoadSync solution back in March 2005.

It provides the same 'push' access to corporate e-mail as Windows Mobile 5.0 handset users, in addition to wireless synchronization of PIM (calendar, contacts, and tasks) data with Exchange Server 2003, as it supports the Service Pack 2 upgrade.

Administrators can also remotely wipe data from a lost device, and users have the ability access a corporate contact list wirelessly.

Documents To Go for UIQ 3.0 is available in English, French, German and Spanish. It sells for $49.99, is free to owners of the UIQ 2 edition, and goes for $29.99 when you're upgrading from a competitive product.
