By James Alan Miller
Developers interested in porting their applications to PalmSource's new Linux OS for smartphones, the Access Linux Platform (ALP), will get their chance to preview the platform at a special one-day event called the PalmSource Developer Day during LinuxWorld, San Francisco, which runs from August 14-17th.
The event, which costs $95 and takes place on the 16th, is targeted towards Linux software developers who are interested in taking their applications mobile, according to PalmSource. Attendees will receive an overview of ALP components plus early access and hands-on experience to building applications for the new platform. Topics for this one-day event will be presented by Tom Chavez, senior product manager for PalmSource and Keithen Hayenga, licensee services engineer for palmSource. Sessions::
ALP merges open source components—GIMP ToolKit (GTK+), GStreamer, and SQLite—with PalmSource’s middleware (messaging and telephony), HotSync, Palm Desktop and personal information management expertise, parent company ACCESS's Netfront Web browser, and a new graphic user interface and application framework code-named MAX. Expect both ALP and MAX to both receive new names by the time PalmSource ships the smartphone platform to manufacturers and developers. PalmSource expects to release the ALP/MAX software development kit to software developers and hardware vendors by the end of 2006. ALP devices aren't due until later in 2007, however. Related Links:
