Palm Dresses Up Treo 650 For 10th Anniversary

Palm is offering a limited unlocked edition of the GSM Treo 650 in honor of the company's 10th anniversary. The $599 unsubsidized Black Tie version of the smartphone, as it’s called, has a different look than a traditional Treo, with a polished chrome framework against a black backdrop with a soft-touch finish, according to the handheld vendor.

Bundled with the smartphone are two accessories, a hard case and multi-functional stylus with pen. It nixes the Treo 650's palmOne logo, the name of the company when it was first released, for the Palm brand.

Aside from the new look, the specifications for the Black Tie Treo 650 are the same as the regular Treo 650, which makes it a good-deal less advanced than the new Palm-based Treo 700p (see our review). Of course that device is only available for Sprint and Verizon's CDMA/EVDO networks. So until a version of the Treo 700p ships from GSM carriers, the Treo 650 will be the top-of-the-line GSM smartphone from Palm.

The close to $600 Black Tie Treo bundle isn't the most economical Treo 650 deal for Cingular or T-Mobile (the two major GSM carriers in the U.S.) customers, but it's sure to be the best looking. The Treo 700p costs even less, about $550 with a one-year contract, but as we’ve said, GSM customers are out of luck when it comes to Palm's latest smartphone model.

More on Treo 650
The Treo 650 measures 4.4 x 2.3 x 0.9 inches, weighs 6.3 ounces, and has an overall appearance similar to the Treo 600's, the first model in the series. Treo 650's QWERTY thumb-keyboard has a backlight, and there's a Secure Digital slot for peripheral and memory expansion.

It uses a high-resolution 320 x 320 display, integrates Bluetooth, and has a VGA camera for 640 x 480 or 352 x 288 pixel images. With the Treo 650, you also get a 312 MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor and 32 MB non-volatile memory, which means you won't lose your data in the event of a power drain.

The Treo 650's rechargeable battery is removable.
