Camera, Music Share Top Billing in Rumored N83

The lights barely dimmed on last week's press conference introducing Nokia's new N72, N73 and N93 smartphones, when rumors and images of another even higher high-end handset from the Finnish phone maker started making the rounds this week. And if the specifications are correct, music and photography will share equal billing with the N83.

That's because the N83 may be built in the mold of today's 4 GB music phones - such as the upcoming Nokia N91 and Samsung SGH-i300x - while maintaining the company's preference for Carl Zeiss optics in the camera, but upgraded to 5 megapixels—with autofocus, mechanical shutter and integrated LED flash—a new high for Nokia. There's purportedly a second VGA camera for video calling as well.

Supposedly, the quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) GSM/UMTS 3G slider opens in two directions, one to reveal the keypad and the other dedicated music keys. As with the other recent Nokia smartphones, it should run on the latest version of the Symbian OS and the Series 60 3rd edition interface.

While rumors say the screen is a 2.5 inch, 352 x 416 pixel resolution, and 16 million color display, a PDAStreet reader correctly points out that it's likelier a QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) type.

Additional features may include Bluetooth 2.0; USB; a microSD card slot; FM radio with Visual Radio; Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) with VoIP calling support; and a 3.5 millimeter jack for headsets.

Reportedly, the N83 and its boatload of features aren’t supposed to be released until the first quarter of next year.
