Update: Treo 700w Direct Push Updater Pulled

The software upgrade that brought push e-mail and more to the Treo 700w - released just last Thursday - is no longer up on Palm's Web site. There's also no explanation as to why updater 1.10 was taken down.

Palm's Web page says, "Temporarily unavailable : We anticipate that the Treo 700w updater will be available at a later date. If you have already installed the updater, please disregard this message."

There haven’t been widespread reports of problems from those who've downloaded and updated their Treos with the upgrade, so it'll be interesting to find out why Palm pulled it down. PDAStreet will let you know more as soon as we hear back from Palm, whom we're trying to contact.

Update: Palm just informed PDAStreet that while most users installed the updater without a hitch, it received feedback that a small percentage of 700w customers running the update did - in fact - run into trouble. The installation processes wouldn’t start because some decompression software may be having difficulty decompressing the installer .zip file, according to Palm representative Jimmy Johsnon.

He said in an e-mail, "Palm is looking into adjusting the updater, as well as reviewing customer feedback on the installer."

More on Updater 1.10
Verizon Wireless is currently the exclusive operator offering the Treo 700w. With push, when a server receives a message, it is automatically sent to a mobile device instead of the user having to manually pull it down or schedule retrievals at set intervals.

Push support is provided for enterprises with Microsoft's Messaging and Security wireless synchronization of e-mail, calendar, contacts and tasks with Exchange Server 2003 with Service Pack 2. Updater 1.10 brings the on-device Direct Push client or AKU2 (Adaptation Kit Update) to the Treo 700w, a Windows Mobile device.

Updater 1.10 also provides additional enhanced e-mail capabilities, including support for other push e-mail solutions, such as Wireless Sync, Verizon's e-mail solution for Domino and Exchange environments, and GoodLink; and enhanced synchronization with the ability to maintain an active data connection after POP or IMAP e-mail synchronizations, and the ability to auto-synchronize all e-mail accounts based on user settings.

There's also improved memory management as well as picture and video handling, and a new Wireless Manager that delivers an updated interface for turning wireless radios on and off on the Treo 700w.

Updater 1.10 is (was?) a 35 MB compressed download. Unfortunately, the update did not contain A2DP (stereo Bluetooth headset) support.
