At CeBIT in Hanover, Germany, T-Mobile is showing of the MDA Vario II - better known to mobile enthusiasts as original design manufacturer (ODM) High Tech Computer's Hermes Pocket PC Phone.

Due to be available this May, the smartphone is the follow up to the MDA Vario, which just started shipping in the U.S. as the MDA from the German operator's American cousin last month; long after European availability.

Recognized MDA Vario II features include Windows Mobile 5.0, a 300 MHz Samsung CPU, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, 2.8-inch display, microSD slot, hideaway QWERTY thumb-keyboard, 2.1 megapixel camera with a second one for videoconferencing, 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of ROM. It is a GSM/UMTS/HSPDA cellular network handset.

UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System ) and HSPDA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) are two different 3G broadband technologies that enable users to transfer data at average speeds of 300 to 400 kbps per second. Both types of networks are upgradeable by carriers to higher bandwidths.

Reportedly, T-Mobile Germany's HSPDA network will hit 1.8 Mbps bandwidths.
