Mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Helio has been serving the young and hip for half a year over Sprint's EV-DO 3G network. It is now expanding beyond handsets (the KickFlip and Hero) with the introduction of a wireless broadband service for laptops called Helio Hybrid, which couples access to cellular broadband with access to the entire 55,000 hotspots found world wide on the Boingo Wireless virtual Wi-Fi hotspot network. By installing the Helio Hybrid card (a rebranded Sierra Wireless EV-DO card) and Hybrid Connector software (made by Tatara Systems to take advantage of Tatara's Mobile Services Convergence Platform on the backend), laptop users can switch between the EV-DO and Wi-Fi hotspots - not just Boingo's - without losing any work.
