Samsung's SGH-i607 communicator with a QWERTY thumb-keyboard , code-named Blackjack, may find its way to Cingular Wireless sooner than later. That's because the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) gave the smartphone its seal of approval this week.

The SGH-i607 runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 like the Motorola Q, and it joins that device, along with Nokia's E62 and others in entering BlackBerry and Treo territory. Unlike a Treo, a Pocket PC Phone, for example, the SGH-i607's 2.3-inch, QVGA (320 x 240) and 65k color display won't be touch; because the Samsung is, like the Q, a Windows Smartphone.

Samsung's quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) GSM/GSRS/EDGE SGH-i607 also supports UTMS/HSDPA high-speed broadband and Bluetooth radios. Cingular has been rolling out its 3G network for the past year.

Some additional features include a microSD slot for up to 2 GB of extra storage, 128 MB of ROM, 64 MB of RAM, a Texas Instruments OMAP 1710 processor, and a 1.3 megapixel camera with a second camera in front for video calling.

The smartphone measures 4.4 x 2.3 x 0.5 inches (113 x 59 x 11.8 millimeters) and only 3.5 ounces (100 grams).
