Rumor Mill: Cingular Preparing Smallest Nokia Communicator

The Nokia 9300 Communicator will soon make its American debut, months after shipping in several European markets. According to recent reports, Cingular Wireless recently informed developers the device was indeed finally forthcoming.

There's still no specific date of availability for the 9300, of course. Nor do we know how much it will cost Cingular subscribers when it does ship.

In the meantime, here's what we do know:

At 5.2 x 2.0 x 0.83 inches and 5.9 ounces, the 9300 is the smallest and lightest communicator yet from Nokia. The Finnish phone giant helped launch the smartphone category over five years ago with the original communicator model, a handset that looked like a typical (if large) cell phone closed and a mini laptop open. All communicators since have been variations on this design.

The Nokia 9300 is one of two fairly new Communicators. We'll review the other, the traditional-sized 9500 model, next week.

For more on the 9300, see Preview: Nokia 9300 – The Smallest Communicator Yet. In this article, we offer our hands on assessment of the European Nokia 9300: specifically, the GSM/GPRS (850/1800/1900 MHz) United Kingdom edition.

The U.S. version of this tri-mode phone will be GSM/GPRS (900/1800/1900 MHz). When Cingular does ship the 9300, we expect the device will be capable of exchanging data and voice over a 3G network, just like the European model.
