Palm, Inc., Microsoft and Verizon Wireless introduced the first product from the Palm to run on an operating system (OS) other than the Palm OS.

The new Windows Mobile 5.0 Treo smartphone, Palm's first 3G device, will be offered exclusively by Verizon for its CDMA and EV-DO high-speed networks. The carrier's broadband service delivers average data transfer speeds of 400-700 kilobits per second.

Although the Windows Mobile Treo isn't due to ship until early next year, a number of third-party software developers have already chimed in with their support for the venture. Below is a list of some them.

  •  AppForge: The company's Crossfire solution is a mobile enterprise application development platform that uses industry-standard tools allowing applications to be written once and deployed to multiple devices, regardless of operating system or network.

  •  Astraware: A developer and publisher of games for Windows Mobile and Palm OS.

  •  Avocent: SonicAdmin lets users remotely manage servers and network equipment from a mobile device. While the company's SonicSentinel product allows them to monitor, manage, and secure all their mobile devices from a central location.

  •  Grabba International: Creates a range of barcode scanners, magnetic stripe, RFID and smart card readers.

  •  Handmark: Handmark Pocket Express provides Fast updates to news, sports, weather, stocks, movies, plus directory search, maps and driving directions. Company is also a provider of many handheld game applications, including Tetris classic, Monopoly, and Scrabble.

  •  iAnywhere Solutions : iAnywhere, a Sybase subsidiary, powers the popular AvantGo mobile Internet service and provides mobile database, middleware, and device management solutions for the enterprise.

  •  Intellisync: Intellisync's wireless e-mail and mobile platforms provide seamless synchronization, secure wireless e-mail, device control and mobility management software connecting devices, data sources and applications.

  •  MobiMate: WorldMate Professional Edition provides Clocks, Weather, Currencies, Itinerary Management, Flight Information, Unit conversion and more on a mobile device. It is best-seller on both Windows Mobile and the Palm OS.

  •  Picsel Technologies: Picsel PDF Viewer enables users to access full, native PDF documents directly on their handset, without the need for conversion or reformatting of content.

  •  scanR: scanR says it will turn the Windows Mobile based Treo smartphones into a mobile scanner, copier and fax, enabling business professionals to scan and send documents and whiteboards wirelessly as a PDF file or fax.

  •  Worldnet21: AnthaVPN "Secured by Certicom" provides secure wireless access to corporate network resources. Built on the IPSec standard, AnthaVPN works with the leading VPN gateways, handheld devices and wireless networks.

    More on Windows Mobile Treo
Not too many product details were disclosed at this weeks press conference. Here's what we know so far:

The name of the first Windows Mobile Treo should be the 700w. It will be built by Taiwanese original equipment manufacturer High Tech Computer (HTC), a leading producer of PDAs and smartphones.

Pictures of the Windows Mobile Treo already show a Verizon logo, plus a flash, camera, keyboard and Bluetooth like a traditional Treo. The device has the same connector as the Palm-based Treo 650.

The Treo 700w display can't be the same 320 x 320 pixel screen as the current Palm Treo model, however, because the Pocket PC edition of Windows Mobile doesn't support that resolution. Instead, it should sport a lower-resolution 240 x 240 pixel type.

The upcoming smartphone has 64 MB of memory, twice as much as today's most recent Palm-based Treo model, the Treo 650. In addition, the Treo 700w has the same non-volatile storage as the current model, which means your data won't be lost in the event of a complete power drain.

Although the Treo 700w does not integrate Wi-Fi, it will support Palm's Wi-Fi Secure Digital card.

    During the Palm, Microsoft and Verizon's joint announcement, the companies demonstrated how with the Windows Mobile Treo you can contact someone quickly from the platform’s Today Screen. You could choose between home, office or mobile numbers, or select e-mail or SMS. And with two letters entered, a user can find a record from among thousands of contacts;

Additional features include the ability to reach people most often called via photo speed dials visible as a band of images on the Today Screen; decline a call with a friendly SMS, signaling "In a meeting" or "Talking with the boss" instead of simply ignoring the call; and rewind, delete or fast-forward through work or cell phone voicemail with familiar and consistent on-screen icons.
