Good Technology has extended its GoodLink wireless messaging solution to enterprises that roll out Samsung's SCH-i730 Pocket PC Phone, currently offered by Verizon Wireless in the United States.

GoodLink provides two-way wireless synchronization of e-mail, contact lists, calendars, notes, tasks and other business applications.

The company's current business model aims to extend access to its standards-based server to a number of different types of PDAs and smartphones. Good once offered its own wireless handheld (ala Research In Motion).

"Good is committed to meeting an increasing diversity of mobile enterprise needs with easy-to-use, highly secure wireless email, PIM and business applications," says Good Technology VP of products Rick Osterloh.

Today, GoodLink, now on version 4.5, supports a number of other Microsoft-based Windows Mobile devices (Pocket PCs, Pocket PC Phones & Smartphones) in addition to the i730 as well as Palm, Inc.'s Treo communicators.

Besides the features mentioned above, GoodLink delivers a "real-time" wirelessly synchronized connection via Over The Air provisioning and application management. GoodLink Compliance Manager, AES and handheld encryption, password policy management, FIPS 140-2 certification and the ability to remotely wipe data from a user's handheld provides security.

The i730 boasts relatively compact dimensions (5.2 x 2.8 x 0.6 inches) and weight (5.5 ounces). It has 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of ROM with a Secure Digital slot for storage and peripheral expansion. It also integrates a QWERTY thumb-keyboard.

Samsung one-ups Palm, Inc. and its Treo smartphones by building the Pocket PC Phone's keyboard on a slider. That means it sits underneath the handset's display when unused, making the unit that much smaller and easier to use as a phone.

Tne i730 is compatible with the carrier's CDMA network, of course, in addition to the its high-speed 3G EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) network. So wherever Verizon offers EV-DO coverage, the i730 should be able to exchange data at a speedy 400 Kbps to 700 Kbps.

There is also Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networking. While Verizon's Treo 650 integrates a camera for still images and video, the edition of the i730 it carries doesn't. Other multimedia features include Windows Media Player 10, dual stereo speakers, and 3D sound.

The Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC Second Edition platform the i730 runs on supports portrait and landscape modes-excellent for Web browsing and viewing documents-for the smartphone's 2.8-inch, 240 x 320 pixel resolution and 65,536 color display.

The i730 sells for $600 with a 2-year service contract and $650 with a single-year subscription.
