Nokia Adds Quickoffice to Series 60

By James Alan Miller
October 11, 2005

Quickoffice, Inc. today gained access to millions of smartphone users as a result of an announced licensing agreement with Nokia. As part of the deal, the mobile phone company will bundle Quickoffice's eponymous office suite with its Symbian-based Series 60 interface—the most popular smarpthone platform in the world.

The Quickoffice mobile office suite (Quicksheet, Quickword, Quickpoint) enables users to open, view, edit and even print native Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents from a mobile device. Version 2, the most recent edition, includes hundreds of new features, such as enriched file management for improved access to files, a scalable user interface plus portrait & landscape viewing

Nokia says it chose Quickoffice because of its superior performance. "We are committed to providing users of smartphones with the best available software innovations as part of our platform offering. The Quickoffice software suite, with its leadership and innovation, meets these criteria.," says the Finnish phone giant's director of mobile software sales & marketing Matti Vanska.

It is not known when the first Series 60 handsets with Quickoffice or a platform upgrade with the suite will be available. Nor did the companies disclose financial terms of their agreement.

In addition to running on the majority of Nokia's smartphones, Series 60 is licensed by Lenovo, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Samsung, and Siemens. There are currently more than 25 Series 60 devices on the market, with Nokia moving over 25 million units itself (as of last May). And, according to market research firm Canalys, Series 60 accounted for 60 percent of all converged device sales during the second quarter of 2005, way ahead of the Palm, Windows Mobile, RIM BlackBerry, Linux and other types of advanced handset platforms.
