Series 2/ Series 3
Hi!

I've used my Psion Series 2 for years as a portable address book, but it's beginning to freeze up on a regualr basis. I do own a Series 3 which I've never used as yet. Can anyone tell me where I can obtain a replacement Series 2 or a place where I can transfer all my data on the Series 2 to my Series 3?

I live in London.

Please contact me directly...at...

spats@spats.demon.co.uk

I'd be very grateful for the help...

Thanks...

Earl Okin.

Where do I go now
After using and loving my 3a for a number of years, I switched to a 5MX. Now due to daily use and abuse, the screen and keyboard are showing distinct signs of wear.

No problem I thought. It must be about the time for Psion to be releasing their next gen machine, and I started dreaming about a new Series 8. Power of the 7, size of the 5, new revision Epoc, MP3, USB. Can't wait.

So what do I do now. My choice is a toy organised like a Palm (nice machine, but doesn't do enough) or a PocketPC (I don't think so!).

I just hope the predictions of other companies picking up where Psion leave off is true. But if it is where the anouncments. It's going to be too late for me, and Epoc has lost another devotee.

The Future
I´ve been psion user for the last 2 years and I feel like all of psion users we prefer psion to Palm, but I think Psion had make a big mistake focusing its development to communication and not to multimedia. We don´t need a revoplus with 16mb, we need Revo color and that could have been the secret of growth. Palms are going to mp3, video, high resolution, conecting through usb (do you know how could increase the communication speed between psion and pc through usb? And for a new buyer between a revo and a Palm he sees color, music, and lots of better feautures. Anyway If Psion and epoc dies I´m gonna dye with them, I only feel sad for all the people that lives thanks to epoc and psion and this is not fair for them.

Interview
I don't know if anybody's looked, but there's a link on the Psion webpage to an interview on another company's webpage where Potter and Levin talk about the future of the Psion PDA. The main upshot seems to be that they see the PDA market becoming commodified and that's not something they want to go into, BUT they will carry on with PDA development and licence the designs to other producers. This is probably the best way forward for all of us; consider that the reason Psion may be falling behind in the PDA stakes is that they are the only producer backing it, whereas Palm have Plm, Handspring, HandEra and Sony, and MS have Compaq, Casio and HP.

I know licenced products have been produced by Oregon Scientific and there is the rebadged Ericsson. However, if EPOC PDAs were produced in the Far East by a company geared up to large-scale production I assume that we'd see both a reduction in cost and an increase in the rate of product change which EPOC *needs* if it's to stay ahead. Even if it's only cosmetic, there has to be a stream of new product. People don't just want what is best, in this sector they need exclusivity.

Series 5 Development
Psion should not underestimate the lifecyle of its products. They are excellent, reliable products and the consumer (normally) can only afford to update their hardware every 4 years or so.

So give it time ! The people with 3c's are only now starting to want to upgrade to the 5 series. In 3 years time they should release a colour version.

I dont think their future has really started yet ! A partner to take on the marketing agianst the multinationals is vital, especially in the US market.

4 years ago I started buying their shares, I am still doing so.

Psion & Machines
It seems a shame that Psion are suspending development - but maybe it's a good thing, as technology behind psion's is getting dated, with the only product with a colour screen being the series 7.
However, is old technology a bad thing? I know a college friend who to this day uses a psion series 2 - it's amazing that it's lasted so long, with it's 3 line LCD screen. Then, when one line of the LCD went, he upgraded to a series 3, with 256k of ram...As a 3d artist he needed power, but didn't think that a PDA should be a whole computer....

What saddens me most however is that this announcement came so soon after concept pictures of the Ace & Halo, two promising but expensive devices....
psi in the sky anyone?

Symbian 6.x
If PSION wants to go out of the market, let them sell their patent on the models series 5, series 5mx en series 7.

Maybe another Symbian-member will give us lookalike's with Epoc R6.1, standard 64 MB Ram, Bluetooth and UTP

Just improve the thing, at least!
I just want backlighting so I can see my snooze alarm when it goes off in the morning. I keep pressing cancel instead of snooze.

Psion could hire an industrial design house to cut that change in. I would venture to say that half the revo and mako owners would upgrade if the price were right.

Color would be nice, but if that's too much of a "stretch" than just give us light.
